The first film I ever rented on VHS was Superman. Our video shop had different colour stickers for pricing on different films, I remember getting The Best Of Tom And Jerry first, it had a blue sticker which meant it was a pound. Then i was surprised and happy to see Superman was also in the blue sticker section and I cannot tell you how many times I rented it, it is the greatest piece of movie magic, the new generation might laugh at the promo, but we really did believe a man could fly. Richard Donner was the man behind the lens, the man who gave us Christopher Reeve and Marlon Brando and absolute movie magic.
On the other side of the cinematic coin (although still an absolute classic in the genre) Donner also gave us The Omen, one of the most terrifying films of all time. I saw it much too young at my grandma’s house and the power of the editing and the music still gives me chills to this day. He also made one of my dad’s favourites Lethal Weapon and the 80’s classic The Goonies, so in his catalogue he pretty much had something for everyone.
Godspeed, sir, thank you for the fantasy of flying above the world, I hope you enjoy the real thing now. x
