There have been some strange remake/reboots in recent years, but here is one that has been making me smile since its announcement – Troma’s classic The Toxic Avenger. The tiny budget superhero movie saw a janitor falling in toxic waste and voila, that’s your show. High concept, high entertainment, no one would call it high art but, Jesus, stop complaining, it was golden trash!

It wasn’t just me who thought that though, as three sequels followed, more surprisingly a musical play and even more surprisingly a kids’ cartoon. No, really.

Now, when Peter Dinklage was announced for the title role I was on board but now the main villain role has gone to Kevin Bacon, who sounds just about perfect to tear down the fourth wall but also play along and give his all to this cult favourite.

The Toxic Avenger, written and directed by Macon Blair (The Hunt/Green Room) starts filming soon in Bulgaria, so expect some early promo work soon. If ever there was a POPCORN MOVIE, this is it. Perhaps give the rest of Troma’s catalogue a look, some of it is pure trash but it is always done with a smile and Lloyd Kaufman’s company is iconic in the horror field. Take a look at Surf Nazis Must Die, Class Of Nuke ‘Em High and Tromeo And Juliet to give you a taste of what to expect when the nerdiest superhero of them all returns soon. You’ll thank me… 🙂
