Poem – Snap :

Eyes off the road

Just for a second.

Turning the cassette over

Speakers hissing loud

Waiting to kick into Good Day Sunshine.

A loud crack

The sound of a branch snapping?

Not wood, alas,

But a human neck now limp and lifeless.

Blood, splatted on glass

Shattered and distorted.

I froze for what seemed like forever, shocked,

Sped away, head spinning.

Every night for a year

I woke myself screaming

Seeing her questioning eyes

Hearing that increasingly loud crack.

Every night louder.

Every night the horror grows.

Now I can never sleep.

The alcohol just makes me sober

The darkened hours never over.
