Every year, 25 films are added to the National Film Registry of the Library Of Congress. The films have all been selected for their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to the nation’s film heritage. In case you are worried that this will only be dry old classics, fear not, this collection is full of absolute classics, whether critical or culturally, exactly as the description suggests.
Stanley Kubrick’s finest work, imho, A Clockwork Orange is the gold medallist on the list along with John Landis’ musical masterpiece The Blues Brothers and the Travolta/Newton-John classic Grease. See, this is not a snobby list of silent movies you have to climb Everest to find the last copy of, nope this is a great list of great movies. Need more? How about The Dark Knight? Christopher Nolan has commented “This is not only a great honour for all of us who worked on The Dark Knight, this is also a tribute to all the amazing artists and writers who have worked on the great mythology of Batman over the decades.” – what a guy!
Want more? How about the gritty Frank Sinatra classic The Man With The Golden Arm? I remember being blown away by that film, as when I was a kid, Sinatra was one of those ‘oldies’ on the talk show circuit, but his performance in this film was stunning, cool and chilling.
Special mention to Shrek, which joins the crew, an animated film that really changed the landscape of ‘family’ films, replacing the sugar with a little bit of grit. And a talking donkey. Hell, I can watch that film all day long. As it appears can the Registry.
