I absolutely loved the first two Tom Holland Spidey movies. Sure, they skewed the character younger but his story was so riveting and his chemistry with Zendaya so electric, that you could forget this is the third time in a generation the series has been rebooted. It was simple. Good vs evil, love versus hate and lest we forget two fantastic leads.
So what of the third? I’m both worried and excited for the latest news out of the Spidey camp, as it is confirmed that Alfred Molina, the explosive Dr Ock from Spider-Man 2 (Raimi version) will be returning as will Electro (Garfield version) as well as Andrew Garfield himself and Kirsten Dunst as MJ (Maguire version). Wait, what? Now I know that universes crossed over in the excellent Into The Spider-Verse and I had no problem with that, but that was a Morales story and so I did not consider it The Main Event. Now, with two Spiders confirmed and behind the scenes talks to get Tobey Maguire to come back too, how are they going to explain having three Spider-Men in one film? Yes, there will be a magic moment where you realise all those memes have come true and the three will no doubt point to each other in an alley and we will all cheer but aside from that, I don’t know how it will work.
I’m presuming we also get The Vulture and The Green Goblin or multiple Goblins and…and…and…it sounds like a dream a comic book fan has after too much sugar and scrawls the scene on a sheet of paper, only for a Sony exec to pick it up and say “Take this, Multiverses!”
I’m also remembering how happy I was when we got that first Avengers trailer with Spider-Man in it and it is SPIDEY, so I will be there day one, whatever crazy ideas they are coming up with. Please let Maguire bring back Emo Peter Parker, just for a scene. C’MON! (I love Spider-Man 3 and it still gets a bad rep but I can watch it all day and twice on Sunday)
