In the cafe’s smallest room

Lived the biggest character.

A beautiful mynah bird

Feathered and frolicsome.

Within seconds of meeting

He memorised your words

Repeating, repeating.

His favourite trick

A primal scream.

The sound of the brakes on the high street outside his window.

He screamed their sad refrain

Endless, tuneless.

When he left,

The silence deafened.

Yet all recall

His magic presence.
