So, My Chemical Romance has split up. They seemed to be one of those bands that either you ignored or were totally in love with, I fall totally into the second category, Gerard Way and the crew produced some of my favourite songs ever, some of the most intelligent and meaningful lyrics and an ice cold beauty that screamed ‘Join our gang!’ even when you felt like a complete outsider.
Live, they were one of the most intense and beautiful experiences, from the second hall at Bournemouth’s BIC to the O2 enormodome, whatever the size of the venue, it was just a gang against the world, noone was an outsider, all were accepted. I remember meeting the band in Cardiff’s Forbidden Planet, before their incredible gig at the CIA, discussing Spider-Man with Mikey Way, Teenage Mutant ninja Turtles with Frank Iero (“They’re just not my bag, dude”) and the forthcoming Umbrella Academy with a coffee hugging Gerard. There wasn’t the separation between bands and fans, you respected them and they respected you.
So, there is a vacancy today for the Best Band In America. Good luck to Gerard, Mikey, Frank and Ray in whatever magical directions their lives are about to take. Thank you for the music.
“Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We’ve gotten to go places we never knew we would. We’ve been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible. We’ve shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.
My Chemical Romance”
