With all the bad press that more urban artists seem to receive these days, perhaps a round of applause should be given to Ben Drew AKA Plan B, not only for the best single and album of last year, but for his new charitable initiatives.
The Hackney storyteller has stated that he intends to give £1 from every concert ticket sold to the Each One Teach One Trust that gives training to school leavers in the capital.
Drew commented: “I think if I don’t do this I will lose integrity. I’ve always been outspoken about certain issues, now I’m in a position where if I didn’t do something it looks kind of hypocritical. In the long run I think it will be healthy to my art and my music, working with these kids.”
If you haven’t checked out Drew’s ‘Ill Manors’ film then I certainly recommend it, it adds colour to the record and works as a stand alone piece of art too. Watch out for a great cameo from John Cooper Clarke who also appears on the album.
